Typographic Resistance: Digitizing the Handwriting of Georgia's Political Prisoners

When a political system imprisons someone, it attempts to erase their physical presence and silence their voice. The system operates on structural erasure — removing bodies from the streets, voices from the public square, and personal traces from daily life. What remains are fragments: hurried phone calls, court transcripts, and handwritten letters in prison cells, that carry the tactile reality of the cell.

In this project, Tata performs an act of typographic resurrection. By collecting, tracing, and digitizing the handwriting from letters sent by Georgian political prisoners, she has transformed these isolated traces of confinement into a functional, living Georgian typeface.

To turn a prisoner's handwriting into a digital font is to navigate a delicate ethical and aesthetic tension. Graphic design often values symmetry, clean curves, and standardized spacing. But the handwriting of a political prisoner is defined by its irregularities — the urgent, uneven weight of ink pressed into a notebook paper.

Tata's design process does not sanitize these imperfections. Instead, it digitizes them, preserving the micro-histories embedded in each stroke. The handwritten letters are treated not just as characters, but as anatomical evidence of survival.

Through this font, the localized archive of a prison cell is democratized. It transitions from a singular piece of paper into an open-source medium.

Without ever knowing it, these political prisoners have handed us a toolkit for our own defiance. When they sat in their cells putting pen to paper, they were simply trying to reach the outside world. Yet, in doing so, they left behind a blueprint for collective survival.

When the state attempts to quiet a voice, typography turns out to be a way to amplify its trace. This font is an insistence that even under the heaviest compression, our collective memory cannot be erased. It is a tool for writing back.
